Why padlocks die here and not elsewhere
A padlock is the most exposed lock anyone owns. There is no door, no overhang, no interior side. It hangs in the weather, takes direct salt aerosol off the Gulf, sits wet through the night in our humidity, and bakes in the afternoon. That cycle attacks it in four ways at once.
The shackle and the body meet as dissimilar metals
Most padlocks pair a hardened steel shackle with a brass, zinc or laminated-steel body. Salt water bridging the two makes a galvanic cell, and the corrosion concentrates precisely at the shackle holes — the one place where the lock has to move. That is why a padlock can look serviceable and still refuse to open: the mechanism has fused where you cannot see it.
Water gets into the mechanism and stays
A padlock sitting shackle-up collects rain and spray straight into the keyway. The pins are steel, the springs are steel, and both hold water by capillary action. Freezing is not our problem here; standing salt water is. A lock filled with salt residue seizes from the inside out.
Sand does the rest
Wind-blown sand enters the keyway and packs around the pin chambers. Combined with an oily lubricant it becomes a grinding compound. Padlocks near the beach that get oiled every few months are often the ones that fail first.
Ultraviolet destroys the protective bits
Rubber and vinyl weather covers, boots and shackle guards go brittle and split under direct sun in a season or two, at which point they stop protecting anything and start trapping water against the body.
Choosing outdoor hardware that lasts more than one season
- Prefer marine-grade materials throughout. Solid brass or 316-series stainless bodies and shackles, and stainless internals, cost more once and hold up. A hardened-steel shackle offers better cut resistance but corrodes far faster in salt air, which is a real trade-off rather than a marketing one.
- Look for a shielded or shrouded shackle where the hasp allows it. A closed shackle leaves almost nothing for a cutting tool to grip and also shelters the shackle holes from direct spray.
- Get the shackle diameter and clearance right. A shackle that is loose in the hasp lets the lock swing and wear; a shackle that is too tight forces the lock at an angle and grinds the holes.
- Check the drain. Better outdoor padlocks have a drain path so water leaves the body. Sealed cheap ones hold it.
- Do not neglect the hasp. A superb padlock on a hasp fixed with short screws through thin wood is protecting nothing. Through-bolted hasps with carriage bolts and backing plates are the actual security, and they cost very little.
- Match the lock to the gate. Aluminium and vinyl gate frames flex; a heavy lock hanging on a light frame wears the frame rather than the lock.
Gates, pool enclosures and yard access
Gate hardware has a job most people underestimate: it has to stay reliable while the gate itself moves with heat, wind and settling ground. A gate that has sagged puts the latch out of line exactly the way a sagged door does, and the usual response is to force it, which bends the latch. Gate latches also take direct impact from wind.
Where a gate is part of a pool enclosure, there are safety requirements about self-closing and self-latching behaviour and about the height and orientation of the release. That is a life-safety matter and it takes precedence over convenience — the latch must return and catch on its own every time, and any lock added must not defeat that. If a pool gate latch is not self-latching reliably, that is worth fixing immediately, before it is anything to do with security.
Storage units, sheds and the hardware inside them
Storage draws a different kind of attention than a house because it is unattended for long stretches and nobody is watching. The hardware questions are correspondingly simple.
For a roll-up storage door, a disc padlock or a cylinder lock designed for the door type gives far less purchase to tools than an open-shackle padlock, and it is the standard for a reason. For a shed, the weak point is almost never the lock: it is the hasp screws, the door hinges (frequently on the outside, with removable pins), and the door skin itself. Through-bolts, security screws and non-removable hinge pins improve a shed more than any padlock upgrade. For anything containing tools, remember that the contents can be used on the house — a secured shed is part of home security rather than a separate topic.
Boats, trailers and the things that live wet
In this town a great deal of valuable property sits outdoors on wheels or on a rack. The hardware for it is a specific category:
- Coupler and tongue locks that prevent a trailer being hitched and driven off. These live inches from the road, take road salt and spray, and seize more often than any other lock we service.
- Wheel and lug locks for trailers that sit for a season.
- Tool-box, rod-box and dock-box hardware, which is usually a cam or push-button latch with very ordinary internals in a very hostile spot.
- Rack and cable locks for boards, kayaks and bicycles, where the anchor point matters as much as the lock.
The maintenance for all of it is the same and takes minutes: rinse with fresh water, use a dry lubricant not an oil, exercise the key regularly so the mechanism does not set up, and replace a lock that has begun to feel gritty rather than waiting for the day it refuses.
When a lock has to be cut off, and how to avoid it
Sometimes a padlock is beyond opening — corroded solid, key long gone, keyway packed with salt. Removal is then a controlled destruction job, and the objective is to sacrifice the lock while leaving the hasp, gate or door untouched, which is a matter of technique and of what the lock is mounted on rather than brute force. It is a routine job and it is entirely avoidable.
Avoiding it is mostly scheduling. A padlock exposed to Gulf air has a service life measured in a small number of years, and it will tell you it is ending: the key gets stiff, the shackle needs a push to seat, the body starts showing bloom around the shackle holes. Replacing at that point costs a fraction of the emergency version.
Keyed-alike outdoor sets, and why it is worth the trouble
Properties here accumulate outbuildings: a shed, a pool gate, a side gate, a storage room, a trailer, a dock box. Left alone, that becomes six locks and six keys, and the predictable outcome is that most of them get left open or the keys get hidden outdoors. Ordering a keyed-alike set — or re-pinning what is already installed to a common key where the cylinders allow it — puts the whole exterior on one key.
Two caveats worth stating plainly. One key that opens everything is also one key that loses everything, so it belongs on a ring you keep track of rather than in a hidden spot. And if the set is issued to anyone else — a yard service, a pool service, a contractor — either use hardware you can re-pin easily or accept that you will rekey at the end of the arrangement.

What the lock is mounted on: wooden gate, aluminium gate, shed door, roll-up door, trailer coupler, dock box. How exposed it is — direct spray, or sheltered under an overhang. Whether the problem is that it will not open, will not close, or is simply worn out. Whether you have the key. How many locks are involved and whether you want them on one key. And whether anything about the situation is time-sensitive, such as a pool gate that is not latching, which we treat as urgent regardless of the security aspect.
Common Questions
My padlock is seized solid on a gate. Can it be saved?
Occasionally, if the corrosion is only in the keyway and the mechanism still has movement. More often the shackle has fused inside the body and the lock has to be removed destructively. The goal then is to sacrifice the lock while leaving the hasp and gate undamaged.
Which padlock actually survives this close to the water?
Solid brass or 316-series stainless, with stainless internals and a drain path, in a shrouded or closed-shackle design where the hasp allows it. Hardened steel resists cutting better but corrodes much faster in salt air, so it is a genuine trade-off rather than one answer being simply better.
Should I oil my outdoor padlocks?
